September Obsessions

September Obsessions

In this (semi) monthly series, I will share things that I can’t get enough of and I encourage you to do the same in the comments. Enjoy!

  1. Community Fridges

If you’ve never heard of a community fridge, it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s a fridge or pantry set up in a neighborhood, packed with food donations to serve the food insecure in that community. I’ve seen a bunch of community fridges on Instagram that are located around the Philly area. I LOVE the idea and it warms my heart because there are so many food deserts in Philly and across the country. It’s so important, especially during a pandemic, to take care of each other and these efforts are a perfect example of how to do it. There are still people who haven’t been able to work since March and people are stepping up to fill in the gaps where the government was unwilling. If you can, donate to a food charity, mutual aid fund, or shelter near you. I’ve been following and donating to The People’s Fridge in West Philly (@thepeoplesfridge215 on Venmo).

  2. Lovecraft Country (The Novel) - Spoilers

Sometimes when I get deep into a show, if there is a book version, I have to read it to find out how the story ends. I get too excited about the story to wait for a weekly show to play out. That’s what happened with Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff and the novel did not disappoint. I enjoy how the show has deviated from the book, adding depth and complexity to certain characters. Specifically Montrose, Hippolyta, and Ji-Ah. What the show captures perfectly from the book is how episodic it is, each chapter focuses on a character and how they are being affected by the supernatural forces that have entered their lives all of a sudden, before coming together like Voltron to fight White supremacist warlocks. Finishing the book made me even more excited for the show. I can’t wait to see if they take the story beyond where the book left off, adding additional characters, myths, and monsters.

  3. Homemade Nut Butter

A week or so ago I wanted to have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast, only to realize that we were out of peanut butter. Since I already had my bread and jelly prepared, I threw a handful of mixed nuts (my mix was pecans, almonds, and cashews) in the food processor with a pinch of salt, a little olive oil, and honey. It was so good! I’m usually not a fan of nut butters other than peanut, but something about the texture and flavors of the mixed nuts made it really appealing. I’ve made another batch since and added some peanut butter and it was heavenly!
